Hello! My name is Norma Huerta-Kelley and I was born and raised right here in Colorado! I have 6 brothers and sisters and attended elementary, middle and high school in Fort Lupton. My parents are originally from the Rio Grande Valley in Texas and I moved there too, when I was in high school and graduated from Rio Hondo High School. I then moved to Kentucky and enjoyed living in the Appalachian mountains for many years and graduated from Union College with a Bachelors degree in English. After college, I traveled to Spain and studied at La Universidad de Madrid before moving to Georgia where I worked as a college admissions counsleor for a women's college, Agnes Scott College. By this time, I was getting pretty homesick - so I moved back to Colorado and married my high school sweetheart, Danny. Together we have raised our 3 beautiful children in Fort Collins and have lived here for the last 26 years. I have worked as a Counselor and Dean of Students in secondary schools, was the Equity and Diversity Coordinator for PSD and most recently was the AP at Boltz Middle School for the last 7 years. I recently completed my doctorate degree in Educational Leadership and am so happy to be the new principal at Harris Bilingual Elementary School!
I was raised by parents who spoke Spanish at home to me and my siblings. As we got older, we began speaking mostly English because that is what everyone at school spoke. When I moved to Texas, my grandmother (who I lived with) only spoke Spanish to me and she insisted that I only speak Spanish to her as well. I studied Spanish in college while I was in Spain and have used Spanish all throughout my career. I am always learning more and more about the Spanish language and am so excited to become more bilingual and biliterate!
My mission at Harris Bilingual Elementary is to support the learning and growing of every staff member, student and parent in our community! I hope to support the beautiful culture that Harris is known for and engage our community in all that we do!
Hmmmm..... I don't like bugs...
I am the principal.
